An Inspirational Story

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full.. The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.' The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed..

'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.. The sand is everything else---the small stuff. 'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.

The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Spend time with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and mow the lawn. Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented. The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.' The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.

Spiritual Love

Occasionally I meet someone wonderful who is willing to let me be a small part of their life.

As the conditions of my life limit what I can offer, I try to honour this person by offering them Spiritual Love. Admittedly, this is sometimes difficult as I crave affection and connection, but I don’t let moments of weakness deter me from my intentions.

So what is Spiritual Love?

Spiritual love is different then a purely emotional love. It is not a sentimental clinging or need to possess the other, nor is it instinct born from the chemistry of lust. It is a completely unselfish and totally unconditional love. The main focus of Spiritual Love is the well-being of the loved one; so for the person expressing it, what they are able to give is much more important than what they are able to receive. Although we can still put a lot of our heart into it, it is a little more objective and detached from the usual sentimentality of the purely emotional love. In fact the love need not even be returned as it is unconditional.

So, why is Spiritual Love so powerful? Because truly caring about another while being free from attachment or expectations is perhaps the purest form of energy we can project as spiritual beings. Spiritual Love is, therefore, a glimpse into the loving creative energy of the Divine.

The Energy of Tantra

Tantra teaches us to combine consciousness with energy. The two greatest sources of energy we have within us are our heart's energy, because that is where love is born and lives, and our sexual energy, because that is what creates life.

These energies can feed each other and help them grow. So just like love increases our sexual energy so can sex increase our heart's energy.

Tantric Arts

Some of the first words I ever read about Tantra are still some of the most beautiful. They were written by a Tantrika who was then known as Mayia Moon. She has since become my dearest friend and someone who continues to inspire me. These are her words:

“Tantra is liberation from the human condition through expansion of the Inner/Higher-Self. When you choose to incorporate tantra into your life, you choose to live through and experience the non-physical self or spirit self on a daily basis.

When we are living in accordance with our hearts, we can get past the illusion of being merely material beings. Therefore, ultimate joy and fulfillment can be ours and it is our divine birth right to claim this type of living.

We are able to experience higher states of consciousness and healing through tapping into the most powerful, potent and delicious life force energy, which is the sexual energy. When we engage all our senses in a fusion of erotic stimulation we give ourselves the opportunity to step out of our programmed ego minds and to harness both the male and female energies in order to experience Oneness with Universal love. Transcending and unifying these opposites, which keep us bound in the ego game, is the path of Tantra.”

More than just Candles

Creating a Sacred Space is more than just lighting candles and burning incense. It includes less tangible items. Within our Sacred Space there should also be acceptance without judgement, the respect of boundaries and confidentiality.
